Overfed and Undernourished

I'm not sure why, but a girl friend of mine told me her Pediatrician didn't think it was necessary for her infant to take a multivitamin. I have since heard this a couple times. Not just in reference to parents being unsure about giving supplements to their babies (although some are a little too comfortable administering drugs, many of which haven't been tested for their long term effects on children, let alone infants.) Isn't it worth considering that if American's are sicker than ever, then something needs changing? Babies are being born sick! Children are being diagnosed with adult disorders and then medicated! Over all, people are dying way before their time. Call it hereditary. Call it a muddy gene pool. The truth is wellness is only achieved through rich nutrition. A lack of proper vitamins and minerals causes a host of health problems rooted in malnutrition. Besides, everyone knows that anything that is alive MUST consume living "things" or "organisms" to survive. If the bulk of what we take in on a daily basis is considered "dead food"....I rest my case.

Think about your children. Nieces and nephews. Maybe your grandchildren. I really get on a soapbox when it comes to little ones, because their only choice is what we put in there lunchbox, sippy cup or on their plate. As parents, we pass down our bad eating habits. This is why I am almost convinced diseases like diabetes appear as if they are hereditary, when in fact they are not. No offense to our beloved ancestors, but they just quite frankly did not have the means to access vital nutrients that we can today. Although many of them still lived longer without all out technilogical and medical advances. Hmm. So for us there is no excuse. If we love our children, friends and loved ones we will do something differently. We will make a change. I of course recommend Shaklee products because they are always safe, always work and are always green. Need proof? A peer review called the Landmark Study was conducted by Dr. Gladys Block, head of the University of California - Berkeley School of Public Health. Check it out :)

SAHMies and WAHMies: Choosing to Stay at Home with Mommy Networking

I hear it all the time. This is what I say to that. Go for it! SURE you may be giving up your social life, but NOT if you stay connected with activities around town and mommy support/playgroups. SURE if you want to split your income in half, but NOT if you turn a hobby into a business or join a well-established and growing mlm. Even watching a couple kids a few days a week and taking a few classes online are all viable options when you choose to stay at home.We are not ants. Do you remember that movie? Every task was for the good of the colony. Although some good can be drawn from this "idea", there is still a hidden sense of personal insignificance. And the truth is we as mothers play a HUGE irreplaceable role in how our children come to view themselves and their place in the world. Contrary to popular belief, climbing the corporate ladder does not make one a portrait of success. What's successful about raising children that don't know you or mind you or anyone else for that matter? After working in childcare for several years I have some strict opinions on the subject, however, I realize that what works for me very well may not work for someone else.

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development along with the Institute of Child Development of the University of Minnesota conducted a study that showed children in daycares have significantly higher stress levels and signs of aggression than children who stay at home with their parent and or caregiver. I also read (however) that kids that attend daycare are better prepared socially and even academically. I can see how both plays a part in readying a child for the real world. So with that being said, both are worth considering, especially since children's personalities and preferences vary.

Can you afford it? Probably not lol! But staying home is definitely doable. It may involve cutting-back for a season. Which may mean driving a less attractive ride, skipping the Starbucks (yikes!) and sometimes turning down dinner dates with friends. The good thing is knowing with diligence, creativity and patience this "minimal lifestyle" doesn't have to last forever. It is a temporary trade for the younger years, building a foundation of character, security and confidence in our children. The idea of "staying home" to others can make you feel guilty about choosing to be a SAHM at times. Its as if you aren't giving your best and getting to "do nothing all day" pass. I have often times been tempted to believe this lie and it is my biggest demotivator! The life of a stay at home mom is a full-time, sometimes lonely, rewarding, frustrating, amazing, stinky, fun, tiring, spontaneous and priceless job. On top of the fact that our kids grow so fast and I don't want to miss one thing, this is only in addition to the call I feel to pour my life into caring and nurturing my family. It is my great honor.

Ya  know, plenty of moms quit their jobs to stay home with their children and are doing very well for themselves. Some people are just happier working, so its the best fit for their families. But who's to say a mommy can't chose to be a WAHMie and WORK from home? The mothers in the video clip are some of my role models. They took a risk, believed in themselves and because of it they along with their families are living a healthier, wealthier life. Some were forced into it because of a layoff or divorce, but others simply wanted something more. More time at home with their family than at the office. Honing your skills and being the best you can at your job is wonderful, but not at the expense of your home and family. Kudos to those of you who have found a happy medium and are balancing these and rockin' at it. You are also fabulous role models. Encourage a mommy to follow her dreams and choose what she thinks is best for her family today!

Oy Vey! Who Doesn't Like to Win?

Hey there! Ya know, I'm not sure if I've seen this much enthusiasm in a while. When I hear the words GIVEAWAY or CONTEST or WIN....it gets my attention, because its fun to win. Good clean competition is equally as fun. Here's the thing. More than anything I am starting to realize how much I (the writer) need you (the readers). Even though I am a big dreamer and a world changer at my core, if no one is passing on the info, than I will get to my goals, only a bit slower than I anticipate. Right now the largest task on my brain is my Greenest of Green Mama Giveaway. I shared my three top reasons for doing the giveaway in my previous entry, but the underlying reason is TRUTH. It is the exact meaning of my name- "truthful one". My very name compels me and fuels me passion. Paired with my love for people, I can't help but want to expose the lies and raise awareness about toxins causing harm to our families and safer alternatives. It matters to me because people matter. Those that don't care unfortunately don't know what they and their families are not only missing out on, but fail to understand what's at risk. I mean there are some no-brainer concepts like parents who smoke and have a child with asthma and ear infections...really? Well now, I wasn't meaning to have such a tone in this post or to offend anyone, but just wanted to mention some things. I don't expect for everyone to like what I say or even believe me though I do research what many refuse to search out, I just feel responsible for sharing. Anyway. Do you know you know how many compliments I receive on my blog...plenty! But how many of those "fans" actually "follow" my page? The answer is few. The truth is, if one child is spared or one family made healthier because of anything I've ever said or posted, that's good enough for me, but the reality is NO competition is NO fun! LOL!! Sooo please enter to win the Greenest of Green Mama Basket this January and share with your mommy friends, because every mom deserves a chance to win. Details in last post. No strings attached. As soon as I organize the basket and make it look super pretty, I will be doing mini reviews on everything included and why you want what you'll see!! Stay tuned ;))

The Greenest-of-Green Mama Goodie Basket Giveaway!

Wowzer! That was a mouthful! I toyed around with the name idea for a while. Names are important, ya know? The simple reason for the big name is for the big idea. The purpose of my giveaway is to:

1. Celebrate the New Year!
2. Showcase some of my favorite natural and green things!
3. Share the gift of GREEN with one special Mama that wants a healthy head start for her family in 2012

Like I'm sure I've said in a previous post, how I LOVE giving gifts! Only this gift is different because although I am submitting something of my own, this is a collective effort to connect my friends and followers with not only safe, green products, but family-centered businesses and local shops that help me make healthier choices for my family! Better options are all around us! I've got a hand full of sponsors for this event and I'm still gathering items to make the biggest basket possible!! And although I've never done a giveaway, I sure am excited about it! So please share this and tweet this January giveaway to your friends and feel free to also message me if you feel you have something nice to add to the basket ;) To enter, you have to be a mom or mom2be (sorry this time my giveaway is just-for-moms) and you have to be a member of my site. One or two goodies will be baby-specific, but just let me know what age kiddos you have. And if you would kindly put the link to my blog in a status or tweet.  Remember to leave your first name and your email (example: doodledoo AT yahoo  DOT com) so I can inform you of your win! That's all folks! Include your info in a comment below and good luck! Deadline TBA

Fist Pump for Moms that Nurse

Ya know, I have nursed my son right up until a month ago. I never imagined I would go this long. I really owe it to my hubby who allowed me to stay home and do what I believe every mother should do for at least the first year (strictly my opinion, and you're entitled to yours). But yeah, getting started wasn't super easy for me.  We did great the first night but eventually I was confused about how often, which side and how many times to burp him, and how many times to pump. Then my pump broke!! Seriously, it can be so overwhelming. I even began supplementing with organic formula because I was so convinced I wouldn't be able to keep up. Truth is, I was afraid of what I heard from other mothers who's milk supply either was weak or just totally dried up. After using formula for a couple months, I became more comfy with the idea of breastfeeding in public and switched back to nursing exclusively. The rest is history. I decided early on to nurse on demand. As I read ahead, I found out that baby-led weaning can carry on for two years or more (which I wasn't interested in...That's a LONG TIME!) All power to the mamas who can rock n' roll like that, it just was not for me. Anyway, after he was over a year, I began to experiment and let him go as long as he could without nursing. Night time nursing slowed down as I realized just because he woke up didn't mean he wanted milk. Now I pat his back and go back to my room :) During the day I may nurse him once near nap time, but pretty soon I'll be cutting it out all together.

I'm an advocate for breastfeeding not just because its been proven to be better for the baby, but because its the natural means of nourishing the baby. Human milk is for human babies, and cows milk is for calves. Goatmilk on the other hand is more similar to human milk and easier for baby to digest. We did that for a while too lol. But mamas milk is the best! It is so good for their immune system and if you are supplementing yourself and eating well- baby gets it too! I'm also a big fan of the perfect the mother-baby bonding that happens. There's nothing like it. My son enjoys twirling my hair between his fingers while nursing. What about your baby? Next time around I plan on having a few mommy necklaces, which are safe for the baby to play with or put in their little mouths...and what's  really great are all the color combinations they come in! I'm also going to get a Medela Backpack! Anway...I think that's all. OH YES-One more thing! New moms need support! People, playgroups and good advice. Ever wonder why some people are so quick to share information that unmotivates or inspires anxiety?? I had one go-to-mommy, my cousin actually, and she was and still is there if I ever need answers or just a laugh. So if you know someone having a baby, encourage them to breastfeed :)

My Biracial Baby's Hair: and how I thought I'd have the upper hand.

This has got to be the most exciting topic I have ever written about! Being that I am in an interracial marriage I get a lot of different questions from a lot of different angles. Some are from well meaning (but ignorant on the subject) people and others are flat out hilarious! I for one have always seen myself marrying a white man. It sounds funny, I know, but when you're raised in primarily white circles the way I was (I mean, it makes since to me). So yeah, I have secretly coveted a mixed baby for my entire life. I think the blend of two vastly different ethnicity is a beautiful thing, no matter the mix. Black and White, Vietnamese and White, Native American and Black, Puerto Rican..I mean, these kids are living doll babies!! However, if its one thing I thought I'd never have a problem with, it's styling my mixed baby's hair.  Honestly. I assumed it couldn't be anymore unruly than my (black) hair, and figured it would probably be similar to my husband's texture of hair. Straight and W-H-I-T-E! LOL! Well needless to say, my child had NO hair when he was born and little did I know that not only would it be curly, but it would also have a HUGE characteristic of my hair: dryness.

In my son's 1st year I have learned so much. Now, a lot of what I've learned about mixed hair, was spawned in the beginning of my natural hair journey. If you don't know, black people don't wash their hair everyday the way many white people do. Our hair is much dryer and naturally more fragile. This is why we use oils, creams and other hair dressers daily. The "black nature" of mixed hair is that it craves moisture. I learned quickly that although I assumed I would be able to simply dampen my little boys "white hair" with water to style it, I couldn't have been more wrong. That's just it! It isn't white hair or black hair at all! But like mine, it needs a lot more than water to be kept soft, manageable and looking neat. The only thing characteristically "white" about my son's hair is that it does need to be washed a little more frequently than mine but some how, still not as much as his daddy's. Another important note about mixed hair is, although it needs moisture, too much will leave it weighed down and greasy looking.

I've never been a fan of No More Tears but I eventually realized that that even the baby shampoo I had chosen to use wasn't cuttin' it for my mixed baby :) It left his hair stripped of its natural oils (which it needs). So I set off on a journey to find something that would clean his hair (naturally!) but not leave it "too clean"...or so clean that it was dry and lifeless. I tried using a bar of African Black Soap (which I was VERY nervous about) but it has shea butter and ash in it. And ya know what? The woolly patch in the back of my sons head softened and curled up perfectly. It worked wonderfully, but when I ran out, I would have to go back to using our Baby Bee from Burt's Bees. So was still on the search for something better. Along the way I learned how perfect leave-in conditioners are for mixed hair. I tried a squirt of my Tresseme Natural Conditioner with a Tbsp of rosewater (great for hair) just to give it a try. It worked! The key I've found is using a really good natural conditioner and just misting his entire head after a bath or whenever I'm ready to style it. My signature regimen for him is doing this and combing it through after I wash it with Basalisa Soap. It seems to have the balance of essential oils that leave our baby's hair soft, detangled and moisturized. Plus, it smells amazing!! It is by far mine and the Hubby's favorite to bathe in, so we run out quickly. We also love the White Tea Ginger (goat milk) lotion, featured in my Choosing Safer Products video post. It has done wonders for our skin and mixed baby's hair!! I welcome all questions and comments ;))

What's on Your List?

Ok- there are several things I have need of, but really besides the ipad2, this on a shirt is like all I want for Christmas. Literally. It would be even more amazing on a hoody! Why, you ask? Simple. Because I love the idea of trading goods and services. Something about it just makes me smile. All the more reason that I NEED to have this in my wardrobe :) What are the top items on your list this year? Will you be disappointed if they don't appear under the tree on Christmas day? Ya know, its funny, I kinda just expect to "get what I get and don't throw a fit"...my preschool class used to say this at the table as a reminder to receive whatever was being served with grace; minus a whine, huff, or another impulsive gesture. Teaching kids good manners is really something.

Anyway, so...  I've been out of the habit of even making out a list. Sad, I know. But I'm changing that this year. I'm believing that what I make happen for others, God will make happen for me. So I'm gonna go right on and start my list and focus on being a blessing to people and all my needs will be met <3 Oh and just fyi, I am planning to do a big giveaway sometime in January so please stay tuned on how you can enter and win - everyone likes winning things, right? I certainly do!!! And its gonna be B-I-G! Please tweet and share my blog with your friends. I really want to beef-up the competition lol. Thanks for visiting! Well then, until tomorrow.

The Gift of Health

I know that Thanksgiving has come and gone, but if its one thing that we are reminded with every passing year its to remain thankful. Grateful for the ones we love, for a home and food, cherishing every moment as if it were going to be our last. How appropriate this is that Christmas follows close behind. I have to say that my favorite thing about the season is the opportunity to express my genuine care and appreciation towards friends and family through GIVING! I mean, don't get me wrong...I enjoy the lights, homemade goodies and radio carols with the best of them. This year though, I'm thankful for something more. My health. It's not what comes to mind at this time of year, when we are making out our lists and trying to catch all the holiday sales, but it is something that counts. Have you ever heard the scripture that says "It's better for a man to gain the whole world than to lose his soul."? Well, its kind of along the same lines. What value would money have to you if you couldn't get out of bed to spend a cent of it? Think about those that won't share in the laughter around the tree, because of the severity of their condition. Health friends, is more precious than presents. This Christmas, I am thankful to God for well-able body and a sound mind. And just like you wouldn't neglect a gift tagged with your name, you wouldn't beat it with a baseball bat or toss it down the stairs...for fear of offending the person that gave it to you, of course!  Take the time to say thank you to the One who deserves it. Don't get it twisted. Not only has He given you a beautiful life to live, but also offers you a love that nothing can top and no one can take away. I love Him for that! And I am compelled to share the gift of His love as well the message of nutrition and wellness to mommies and their families...and pretty much everyone I meet. Its kind of like re-gifting a gift that keeps on giving. So instead of elephants, how about you re-gift some family wellness :) I honestly don't feel that I have MUCH to offer anyone this Christmas...except what's in my heart. Tis' my glorious mission!

And now I go to resume listening to Pandora's lovely selection on The Frosty the Snow man Station :D Yay for Christmas!

Oh yeah- got our big boy's vitamins in the mail! Actually its a powder that's really for infants and toddlers...but I'm calling them his big boy ones. They are the best! The essential vitamins and minerals he needs PLUS probiotics for healthy immune and digestive function. Mixed with juice or his applesauce, he can't even taste 'em! ::wink wink:: Here's what the bottle looks like...

Don't Drink the Water Girls ;)

Here we go again...my girlfriends are all havin some. Babies that is. Its all around me and I feel like its breathing down my neck! The inevitable, baby itch! I am in the posture of ignoring it lol! Anyway, my entry today is a vlog entry. Not my own but a highly recommended watch to my "expectant" friends. It's about chemical sensitivity in the womb and the importance of keeping the body as pure as possible during pregnancy. I don't think any mother to be in her right mind would be ok with her unborn child swimming in a toxic sea. But what we put in our bodies determines the environment of the womb. Exposure to certain environmental toxins cause several illnesses, disorders, behavioral problems in children and difficulty conceiving/inability to carry full term in child-bearing age women. Getting rid of the unnecessary ones in our home is a good start. Here is some quick advice for giving baby your best.

1. Limit your exposure to toxic chemicals, because they cause a lot of preventable issues in you and your baby's health. Wear gloves and masks while cleaning (or Get Clean with Shaklee;) Just as you avoid smoke, the fumes of your cleaning products are very harmful to breathe.

2. Buy safer/natural cosmetics and personal care products. Since whatever is on the surface of your skin gets absorbed and then seeps into your bloodstream, what you use on your skin during pregnancy is a big deal! Did you know that even many of your favorite cosmetics are made from boiled down animal fats and other animal bi products? It's gross, so no one talks about it. I think its best to avoid them all together. Its only for nine months ;)

TIP: I've found that natural rosewater is an amazing toner and works wonders for your skin! It even tightens pores ladies! I've been using it for several months and always get complements <3 This is an ancient beauty secret!

I say just give your natural pregnancy glow a go. There's nothing quite like it - so enjoy!

3. Avoid colas (especially diet) and get plenty of fresh water and air. And of course, take a good wholesome food supplement, instead of these man-made synthetics. It will reduce nausea. And also, seriously consider any medication, shots, and testing (tb skin test) you allow to be done. Most have not been tested and observed long enough to even know of any long term health risks to you or your little one. Just be aware.

Slings & Things: The Babywearing Scene

Have you noticed more mothers "wearing" their infants around? I've even heard that many mamas carry their toddlers on their hip or on their backs. Now granted, I haven't seen too many people rockin' the slings (as pictured below). I originally  purchased one for my newborn that seemed (to me) to cry a lot. Mind you, he was my first and so I didn't really know what to expect even in all my years of babysitting and childcare. So anyhoo,  I was searching online for an answer,  I read that new babies can sometimes have a hard time adjusting to the world outside the womb. Think about it, all baby has known is hearing his mother's heart beat as well as her voice. So with this in mind, I first tried a sling. I'll have you know, that my son hated it in the beginning. But after a few times, he knew what was going on. At this time, the only reason I had chosen the "sling" method of wearing my baby, is #1 Looks: it was black/white, neutral since we didn't find out what we were having. It also happened to be reversible! and #2 Availability: I got it from Target online with a giftcard. Little did i know that there was a whole world of babywearing to be discovered. I later learned that not only were the other options as far as the style of carriers go, but they come in an array of different colors and fabrics. There's ring slings, maya wraps, ergos, bobas, didymos, neobulles, girasols...the list is endless. OK. There are no wrong choices. AND- there is a perfect wrap for everyone. I've even seen daddies rockin it out! What really tickles me is the response I get from people. I've gotten everything from a smile, to a stare down like I just walked out of a National Geographic. I've GIVEN thumbs up to fellow babywearers :D

I will say this, even though I own a sling, I do NOT recommend them for new babies. I remember my mom expressing her concern after hearing that a newborn had suffocated in this style carrier. Since it was on the news it was easy to I look up the report. The parents sued Target and Eddie. Basically, the infant's position caused her airflow to be cut off. Her dad was the one carrying her. This doesn't happen in wraps because you can wear your baby upright and securely wrapped to your person, their faces clear of fabric.

My heart goes out to that family, but with slings...this is easily done. So for starters, don't buy anything that looks like The Eddie Bauer Sling and Hip Carrier€€ (seen here). Following my purchase (thanks to a few friends) I have now tried the Moby wrap and a Didymos woven wrap. The Moby is a stretchy, soft, lightweight cotton blend; excellent for new babies. I won't be buying one of my own because if you wear it with a larger baby it starts stretching out a bit. I also didn't like having to re-adjust it if I wore the wrap for a long outing. Now the Didymos on the other hand, was my cup of tea. According to my understanding its a cross of linen and cotton...depending on the percentages...some wraps have more "give" than others. I have found them to offer amazing support for babies ranging from cruiser to toddler size, however they seem to work for smaller little ones all the same. The one I tried was a type of gauzy-like fabric, which makes it an ideal wrap for summer months because its incredibly breathable. The only thing I didn't like was the texture of the cloth, not my idea of comfy (fashionable, yes.) but i think they all soften up with repeated washing. All in all I highly recommends the Didymos. In fact, I think any wrap, no matter what kind, is a wise investment for new mommies (dads too?) They keep baby close enough to smell your scent and feel your warmth AND it makes it super discreet to nurse in public ;) Hands-free is always a plus, too.

Pretty, Pretty Poison: Choose wisely

So...on the topic of personal body and hair care. We all know brunettes wanna be blonde and blondes wanna go brunette. For all I know, you may be ready to trade in your curly-q's for the long, dramatic, wind-blown look....or extentions quite possibly! I've done all of the above so to that I say, to each Her own ;) Am I allowed to be say that I've been in frump-mode for a few years. ((You know, trying to survive the days of a lower (newlywed) income and in addition, adjust to motherhood?)) I have to be perfectly honest, its been rough. I feel kinda like Style is a long lost bestfriend. Anyway, rants on reclaiming my fashion sense is for another post all together.

If you know me, you know that I read-up on everything...stats, records, articles, youtube reviews, google scholar...you name it- I check it out. Why bother? Because its important :) Here's the run down of things to keep an eye out for.

Parabens: used to keep cosemetics, pharmaceuticals and even food fresh, preventing the growth of mold and bacteria. In short, its a preservative. The trouble with parabens is that they are linked specifically to breast cancer, hormone/endocrine disruption and reproductive problems. YUCK! (Methyl- Butyl- Propyl- and Ethyl-) Think of them as nicknames for four twisted sisters- all with the last name Paraben. Often you'll notice one or two of them, but sometimes they roll together. They can be found on back labels of name brand body wash, deodarant, face creams and lotions.

Sulfates: what do Pantene, Hebalessence, Suave and Dove all have in common? The bubbles, the bubbles and bubbles! It has a few different forms. Two you may see are as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate. A sulfate is a synthetic detergent for washing hair. Oh yeah, its also in toothpaste. It is a well known irratant to skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.

Silicones: "the slip in the sleek" this ingredient is the silky smooth you feel when you're washing your hair. Its what gives frizzlessness to frizz-free products. Results seem desirable, but at a price. Silicone coats the hair, making it appear healthy and lustrious, when in reality it could be very damaged. And since it is not water soluable, you can't just rinse it out. This means over time it cakes on, layer upon layer. The majority of shampoos and conditioners contain them as well as many leave-on products and cosemetics like eyeshadow. Spot them as anything ending in -cone or -one.

I think it would be safe to say that all these ingredients (minus silicone) can be considered carcinogens; any substance or agent known for producing cancer. These  chemicals are toxic on the celullar level, which means they can interfere and damage the structure of DNA. Many products have several carcinogenic ingredients.

The simple reality is, some may feel free to keep doing the same ole same. Others will change. Here's me telling you what I've learned along the way. There is a  wealth of knowledge out there for you to explore as well as a rapidly growing market of safer products to try, that will produce similar if not better results for you-believe it or not! We are creatures of habit, but all it takes is a simple decision to start where you can.

So if you want to go platium blonde...sweet action. If you wanna chemically wipe out your kinks...knock youself out! I for one prefer to stay all naturelle ;)

:Here's to a naturally wonderful, more beautiful you::

Moved with Purpose

Have you ever been on a quest? A search for something important or intriguing? Something that you could not ignore, but had to pursuit with all your heart? I have only felt this passion a few times in my life. But did you ever feel like finding that buried treasure was only a fraction of the prize? Like following a rugged map, climbing mountains, crossing streams, and the many other things we discover along the way, all put the thrill in the chase! The journey alone holds value...right? (I am feeling a bit dramatic this morning :) but with good reason...purpose!)

There has been something going on in my heart. The desire to give without reserve. The desire to be an unexpected blessing. The desire to live and move with purpose. Well, this morning, while searching for "something", I came upon something else. And its beauty inspired me to the core. I came across Birth Mother Baskets (bmb). The story is about Gina, a brave young birth mother who gives her precious baby away, all for love. Through the pain of her experience she has organized this amazing non-profit, to give other birth mothers something to bring home from the hospital. Bmb is always accepting donations and especially during the holiday season, it's easy to pick up a few extras to give away <3 I posted their button in the sidebar, so please check them out and take this great opportunity to be a blessing!

I'll always be an advocate for adoption, from this day on!

Grapes never tasted so good!

Yummy! Vivix!
Ever heard of Resveratrol? I hadn't either. Barbara Walters did a special about it a few years back, and I watched the excerpt. Supposidly its found in the skin of grapes, specifically red grapes. It is what's responsible for giving red wine its anti-aging properties. Anyway, there has been a breakthrough in resveratrol research! Shaklee is #1 in nutrition in the US and they have patened this antioxidant rich formula in a product called Vivix.

I actually had an opportunity to try some recently, and I was surprised by how great it tastes! It reminded me of grape juice, only a little thicker, and richer. I don't drink, but I think wine lovers will find this product intriguing :) In a 30-day supply, you get the same amount of resveratrol that's in 3,000 glasses of red wine! (Minus the harm that would be done if you really decided to drink that much lol.) The research backing this product speaks loudly enough, but results speak even louder. Not only can Vivix help people feel younger, because it works on a cellular level, it has actually been known to relieve symptoms of degenerative diseases, cancer, immune disorders, migraines, asthma and allergies. I've also heard testimonials of helping with improved speech with special needs as well as improved concentration in children with ADD/ADHD.

A  very good friend of mine who used Vivix faithfully every day explained that it corrects damage that has already been done in the body. It actually can improve dna. Sounded good to me :) In the near future I plan to do a complete review on this amazing product, after having used it for 30-days. Vivix can seem a little pricey to some and for cost I rate it as a 4. But if you consider cost as an indicator of value, it can be worth what you're willing to pay. Across the board, Vivix is worth looking into. It's a very unique product and a great addition to any regimen. Your body will thank you :) Find out how to get some Vivix for free!

Choosing Safer Products for My Family

It's so important to read labels. The same way I might  check the back panel of food packaging for my toddler, keeping an eye out for high fructose corn syrup or too much sodium. Rule of Thumb: if you can't pronounce the ingredients, you probably are better off not using it. However, if big words don't scare you, check out the EWG's site (www.cosmeticdatabase.com) There you can type in any specifically questionable ingredients and find out just how icky they really are <3 Do the best you can with what you've got - every little bit counts!

Here's to home and family!

Happy Birthday America!

Well, it's the fourth everyone! I realize I haven't had enough time to get out of practice of blogging, but somehow I've managed to. It isn't because forget or don't have anything to say. Ha! Imagine me with nothing to say!  Its more or less because I have a broken computer at home and no internet service. Yeah, so the only way I could write would have to be on my phone, and lets face it, who wants to blog even as much as a paragraph, squinting. Not I. Anyhoo. Not too much has been going on lately. The baby and I have gone swimming once since my last post, and this time with a giant speedboat floaty. Its adorable and he adores it. I plan to take him again soon.

Now then on to a much more exciting topic....well to me anyway. I am writing a novel! Something I've always ALWAYS wanted to do. I write many things including music, but never a novel. I have attempted short stories of all sorts, with the intention of extending them, but to no avail. But I recently recalled something a teacher once said about me, and that's what I'm focusing on. She said, "Now....Allison, is a wonderful storyteller." It was in front of the entire 8th grade class. I was like say what??  But now I'm like...hey, whatever works. LOL. So yeah, I'm in the process of developing my characters, and I'm having so much fun doing it! Since I am a firm believer in there being no reason on earth, why anyone should have to reinvent the wheel, I Google everything :) I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing, but when I Google and YouTube, there is no need to know it all. Supposedly, some writers use questionnaires and devise charts to get to know their characters. The questions range from how old your characters are, to how many siblings they have. Its been exciting to think up the endless scenarios, and how my character will interact with each other. I have decided to write my story in 1st person, this being my number one challenge. I guess it has something to do with my fear that readers will link controversial attitudes and behaviors to me. I have often wondered if authors chicken-out for fear of what people will think. I however endeavor to be continually learning and growing which is precisely the reason I will likely keep it in 1st. It seems more realistic if I write from that point of view. I even scanned the books I own in search of varying techniques and borrowed one from the library to read as I write. It's helping me think like a writer and beef-up my characters as well as my plot.

The second challenge that I've come up against, is writing from a character's point of view that I do not personally agree with. My main character would probably claim to be agnostic, however I clearly and firmly believe there is a God who knows me and not only that, He loves me. As I am the telling the story from the main characters point of view, I will have to try very hard to not allow my own convictions to taint her own. What fun! Also, I have got to figure out how to stir in the right amount of humor, suspense and romance. One of my biggest concerns is how I will avoid turning this novel into one fat ball of mush... if you know what I mean...I'm not trying to script a soap opera here. I'm hoping for as true to life as I can make it. Something interesting that keeps happening to me, is that I'm seeing the names of my characters and places in my story, everywhere I go. Found one was scratched on a brown table outside McDonald's, one on a road sign I turned on, I read one in someones face book status....now these are not all common names and places people. Do you know how imaginative I am? I'm serious, and it just keeps happening. I'm loving it. Keeps my motivated and focused. I've also had my eye out for other names that better capture the heart and soul of certain characters, so nothing is in stone yet. So for now its just write and rewrite. Anyhoo... I will try to keep you updated on my progress. Ta Ta

Splish! Splash!: Shi's first time at the pool!

Well...today was fun! Baby boy and I got up earlier than normal to make sure today's play date was a success. We planned to make a stop at my moms because she wanted to pack us a nice lunch to take along (fine by me, of course). Three towels, two lunches, one blue ducky, and extra diapers....then we were on our way to meet up with some old friends of mine and their kiddies. I can't explain the delight I felt driving through the little country town the way I did for years on my way to school lol. If you're familiar with the song You're Gonna Miss This by Trace Adkins, its a real tear jerker isn't it? Well if you didn't know, now you do...I HEART COUNTRY MUSIC. To be honest, I thought I wanted to cry for all the memories welling up inside. Well after that song came on I really almost lost it hah! Somehow I held it together by being equally excited about making new memories with my little boy. Anyhoo...enough about ooey gooey feelings. We planned to play at the outdoor splash/wading area but it wasn't going to be open for a few more hours so we had to go inside...which was fine because I don't have any baby sunblock yet (going with a natural choice, for sure). As fair as Shi is, I know he has to have it :) Among other things I haven't gotten around to getting him some swim trunks :/ but the cloth diaper covered in surfer monkeys was perfect! No matter how many things I didn't remember to bring or do before I left the house, it didn't seem to affect Shi's time. I got his feet wet first sitting on the stairs and as we watched the bigger children slip down the slide, eventually he was submerged shoulder-deep. I don't think he stopped kicking his feet once while we were in the water and he clearly wanted me to let him test his scuba skills by the way he was lunging away from me :) This is a rather short post I guess, but keep in mind that I'm mainly writing today to give some explanation to the pics I wanted to post of our adventure!

For lunch we had tuna on oat bread (well, I did) peaches, grapes and sweet tea! Shi had some fruit, juice, applesauce and crackers. Boy does he enjoy lunch time.

Shi chillin by the pool side, waiting for me to get dried off so we could leave. He did great! This was topped off by a short nap in the car and a long nap at Nonna's :) All in all it was a fabulous day together

C is for Caring... That's Good Enough for Me

Hello Everyone! This is my first blog ever!! I'm pretty amped about it :) I have been toying around with the idea for sometime now and finally....at the suggestion of a dear friend, I have decided to take the plunge into Blog-topia: land of the Bloggers. I've called it such because I think that just about anyone I've come in contact with that blogs or vlogs finds it to be alot of fun....which I'm up for ;) Anyhoo. I am an aspiring wife, mother, songwriter, artist, photographer, novelist....and the list "grows" on. I guess you could call these some of my main interests...along with cloth-diapering, homebirth, and organic living...which someone recently told me for this reason, she could tell I was a "real flake"...whatever that means. LOL.

I plan to blog about these things but you may also come across posts on the newest book in my library or about how I fell and sprained my ankle ((like I totally did today :/)). I'm sure you noticed the name of my blog has to do with doodling. I'm very artistic and visually stimulated, by nature. I enjoy making lists to help me organize my personal goals, thoughts and tasks of the day. I doodle when I'm bored. I doodle when I'm on the phone. I doodle when I'm listening. I doodle when I'm feeling anxious. I doodle to help myself remember things. I doodle for fun...which I'm ALWAYS up for, like I said. I found that since these day to day events all have the common thread of "doodling" running throughout...what name could be more fitting??

Now, about the title of this post. If you have been an Earthling for any length of time, you are probably familiar with Cookie Monster from Sesame Sreet. From diapers to dinner plates, you can pretty much find his blue furry face anywhere. One thing that stands out in my memory about CM is the little diddy he sang quite often. C'mon, you know the one that goes...."C is for cookie that's good enough for me....cookie cookie cookie starts with C!" Well with that tune in mind, I'd like to say that instead of cookies, to me the letter C stands for words like caring and compassion. People can do without cookies, but everyone could use a dose of caring here and there. Life isn't always easy. Whether adjusting to the role of a SAHM or any other major life change, I want to offer encouragment and support to any and everyone that comes across my page. The truth is we really can learn from others experiences :) On a lighter note, don't be surprised to find info on Home and Family Life, Child Nutrition and Wellness or Business Opportunities for mothers that want to stay home with their children....these are all very close to my heart <3

Until my next daily doodle....
